Pedra da Gávea (Gavea Stone)

Located near the sea between the beaches of São Conrado and Barra da Lagoa, Pedra da Gávea (Gavea's Rock) shoots up 2762 feet. One of the most peculiar rock formations in Rio, the northeast face has the shape of a sphinx, and holds a very interesting route called Travessia dos Olhos (Eyes Passage). The east face also has some beautiful climbs like the Aquarius Wall with its 10 pitches, 5.10d. There is also the option of taking a 2-hour trek through the forest to get to the rock’s picturesque summit.

Agulhinha da Gávea (Gavea's Needle) is a small and beautiful mountain located inside the Tijuca Forest. With routes three to six pitches long, rating between 5.5 and 5.11b, this is a nice climbing area, especially in the summer. In the very green environment that surrounds Gavea’s Needle you may easily have the opportunity to spot wild monkeys and exotic birds.

A short trail connects this small summit to a hanggliding ramp, thus making it is possible to combine the two amazing activities in a single day. From the ramp, a certified professional guide leads the climber on an exhilarating tandem flight over Tijuca Forest, São Conrado district, Pepino Beach and close to Pedra da Gávea’s huge walls. The golden finish is at the coconut waters of São Conrado Beach, which the climber may enjoy over the rest of the day.
