Morro da Urca (Urca Stone)

Urca Stone is a small peak standing west of Sugar Loaf. Urca is also a traditional and exclusive residential neighborhood in Rio. It is one of the calmest and safest areas in the city; its architecture consists of mainly small residential buildings and houses.

Together, Urca Stone and Sugar Loaf Stone form the most traditional climbing area in Brazil. There are more than 200 routes in Urca, among them boulders, top-ropes, easy and hard multi-pitches and aid routes up to A4.

One of the classical routes, Ácidos (The Acids), is located near Morro da Babilônia (Babillonia Montain). It has an obvious roof with the standard Nosferatus route graded 5.12c and other 24 single pitch lines from 5.8 to 5.12c.

The journey to Urca Stone from the beach park of Praia Vermelha (Red Beach) is a climbing adventure in itself. You will encounter sea cliffs and rock formations like the Urubu Stone, with crimpy face-climbing sport routes from 5.10a to 5.13c, and Southern Comfort a 5.13c, a nice and sportive route with a view of the bay.
