The Itatiaia National Park
Located
at the border of three states, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and
Minas Gerais, this is the oldest national park in Brazil. Due to its
altitude, Itatiaia is considered Rio's "highlands." The
landscape is complemented by a massive area of Atlantic Rain Forest
and wildlife different from other areas that are characterized by
denser vegetation. Its beautiful settings and numerous rock formations
make of Itatiaia one of the most exotic climbing areas in the country.
The park is home to the third highest mountain in the country, Agulhas
Negras Peak (Black Needles) measuring 9442ft. The beautiful mountain
atmosphere of Itatiaia is the wild option for a classic ascent and
other sports activities. At just 3-hours from the city of Rio, it
is not to be missed.
