Serra
dos Órgãos National Park, (Organ Mountains): A one-hour
drive from the city of Rio, this park is concentrated in an area measuring
110 km² (43mi2). Full of green Atlantic Rainforest--preservedd
since the discovery of Brazil--Organ Mountains is blessed with more
than 16 peaks, some at altitudes of more than 6560 feet. The highest
peak
is Pedra do Sino (“Bell Rock,” 7424 ft, which can be reached
through a 4-hour hike; on the way there you will be surrounded by
interesting specimens of birds and the local fauna and flora. The
most famous formation, and the most climbed in the park, is Dedo de
Deus peak, (God's Finger, 5551 feet), which resembles a left hand
with its index finger stretched out, pointing towards the sky.
The park also has excellent and beautiful trails for trekking, including
“Escalavrado Escape” trail or “Bell’s Rock”
trail (it has a fantastic ending at “Green Pig” waterfall),
which makes it a great place for those interested in this sport as
well. Two of the main cities near Rio, Petrópolis and Teresópolis, offer good lodging and a nice variety of gastronomical choices if you would like to enjoy either city for a few days, or even the weekend.
